What better way to enter the blogosphere than by posting some Voxtrot? A crazy month of concerts continued this past Sunday when the Austin band played their first of two shows at the Mercury Lounge. I expect that they will be playing Bowery if not Webster next time around – hopefully after releasing a full length album. I was able to record the entire show which I’ve posted here, though be warned, there was some annoying distortion coming from the left speakers during a few songs. It’s decent quality for a handheld minidisc, but I still have some settings to fool around with before I’m gonna happy with my recordings. There are 11 songs total plus some delicious banter.

I have to admit, having not heard “Start of Something” prior to the show I honestly thought it was a Smiths cover. Especially after Ramesh announced it as an “oldie”. That’s not a bad thing though. I’m sick of people writting off a band because they sound like Band A + Band B. (In Voxtrot’s case, I’ve usually seen some combination of Belle & Sebastian, The Smiths and Gang of Four). As far as I’m concerned all three of those bands are quite different and quite good. I don’t see a problem with being influenced by a bunch of good bands that span two decades. Of course when the comparisons use just one recent band plus a gimic (i.e. Interpol + Dance Beats = Editors) I’m a little more inclined to label them as derivative.

A bunch of people wrote real reviews and took pictures at the show (I’m not venturing into that territory yet):

If you don’t feel like grabing the entire set above, here are my two favorite tracks:
