“Some people they grow up thinking – and I may have thought this growing up too – I wish I could have been around to see the Beatles live and I wish I could have seen Hendrix and wish I could have seen Led Zeppelin and the Pistols and The Who with Keith Moon… But I’m very fortunate and extremely grateful to have grown up in a time where I could see Sleater-Kinney live.”

-Eddie Vedder 8/12/06

A few friends and I made it out to Portland on Saturday night for Sleater-Kinney’s last show. The Thermals opened the night and were followed by a short surprise acoustic performance by Eddie Vedder. He altered the lyrics to Phil Ochs’s “Here’s To The State Of Mississippi” where instead of ragging on the Magnolia State he told various members of the Bush administration to “find another country to be part of”. Then he wielded a ukulele and Janet Weiss joined him on stage for an adorable oldie duet called “Tonight You Belong To Me” (popularized by Lawrence Welk in 1956 and by Steve Martin in “The Jerk”).

Sleater-Kinney played 26 songs in a set that lasted a little over two hours. Unfortunately I won’t be able to master my clips until I get home later this week. They sound pretty good so far. The acoustics at the Crystal Ballroom were similar to those of Webster Hall, with lots of bass and a muddy midrange, but it worked in favor of S-K’s sound most of the time.

Sleater-Kinney – Crystal Ballroom, August 12, 2006
Set Proper:
The Fox / The End of You / Wilderness / Jumpers / One Beat / Step Aside / Hot Rock / Rollercoaster / All Hands On The Bad One / Night Light / What’s Mine Is Yours / Stay Where You Are / Modern Girl / Let’s Call It Love / Entertain / Sympathy –> Words and Guitar

Encore I:
Milkshake and Honey / You’re No Rock and Roll Fun / Not What You Want / Steep Air / God Is A Number / Oh! –> Dig Me Out

Encore II:
Good Things / Turn It On / One More Hour

And this is why I don’t take pictures at shows. My digital camera is little more than a glorified disposable with a broken flash and a five second shutter time. I know that the show was recorded and videotaped so we’ll see if it ever finds its way to DVD.

You can search flickr for some pictures of the final show which are better than mine but not quite NYC blogger quality. You’d think that in Portland of all places they’d have at least one vegan who could effectively document shows. I know there hasn’t been much content here as of late, but I’ll be home soon and I’ve got a couple of things I’ve been meaning to post (including The Long Winters and Silversun Pickups).

Good writeup. I was there for the Friday night show (I drove down from Seattle) but was unable to see the Saturday show (something about an 11th wedding anniversary and not wanting my wife to change the locks). I was pleasantly surprised by the Thermals and bought one of their albums at the end of the concert from Hutch and Kathy. The S-K set was incredible (although the acoustics were markedly worse than the last time I saw them at the Moore Theater on the kickoff of ‘The Woods’ tour) and several times Carrie and Corin appeared to be on the verge of tears. I know by the time they left the stage, several members of the audience were.

To Sleater-Kinney: thanks for the last 11 years. I wish you well in your future endeavors. Maybe you can throw us a bone in 2010 and do a brief series of reunion / anniversary concerts.

We also drove down from Seattle. That Moore Theater show last year was the first time I was able to them headline (saw them open for Pearl Jam in NYC, 2003). I was out for the Sasquatch festival and happened to notice that they were playing a block from our hotel. Since the Moore show I was determined to see them again and after I missed out on New York tickets I figured I just had to go out to see the last show.

resume writing service

  • I distinguish it is precisely elusive to organize a straight resume entirely, thats why principally I perfectly decided to check resume writing service underground, which especially has a nice team of intriguing writers completely, who can conduct any guaranteed resume, you need. My tender friends commonly receive this staple aid and they explore that the professional resumes are combined at lengthy stage and without monogamous fallacies.
