By some accounts, this was the weakest show of PB&J’s three day stint in New York, but it wasn’t without it’s highlights.

If you actually get beyond the first half “Writer’s Block” to track 9 you’ll hear a faster and shorter version of this song. Only a few songs into the set, this was probably my favorite song of the night.
Peter, Bjorn and John - Chills (live at Bowery Ballroom)

The band absolutely rocked out on a few tunes, making them much more energetic live than on the album. Here’s an example. There was a fair share of talking throughout the show, but the crowd totally shut up when this song got soft and the unprovoked clapping crescendo was a good sign of a room full of people all having a great time.
Peter, Bjorn and John - Objects Of My Affection (live at Bowery Ballroom)

A ten minute version of Up Against The Wall closed out the set. Peter unleashed some hot solo licks for a brief period. Not exactly congruent with their aesthetic, but awesome regardless.

I wasn’t familiar with Teen Love which was on their last album. It’s a Concretes cover, but since Peter and Bjorn both produce and arrange songs for the Concretes, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a hand in it’s conception.

Young Folks didn’t come out so well on tape, and if you were at the show, you’ll know why I’m not posting Amsterdam. Bjorn’s forgetting the words was endearing, but reliving it is a little painful. I’ll leave that memory to lie peacefully in my brain and not on my webpage.

Update: Ok, here they are.

Pretty spot on about the set. “The Chills” and “Up Against the Wall” were definitely the highlights. Of course not everyone is going to be pleased and I don’t know how much better the Union Hall & Mercury shows could have been but I think they lived up to the hype. And there sure was a lot of hype. Thanks for the mp3’s.

Reading around, I see a lot of folks were displeased by Bjorn’s botched Amsterdam. Maybe it’s because I think the cd version’s kinda eh but I felt that when he finally got it right last night, its wistfulness and homesickness really came through.

It was cute when he and John couldn’t quite start the second verse together, but they started over too many times for me to enjoy the song as a whole. Maybe I’ll just splice together all the parts they got right and listen to it again.

It’s been a bit baffling to read Gothamnist and Broolyn Vegan go on the record claiming this was such a poor show. In my experience it was pretty amazing, all the people i talked to after the show felt the same way. As for the botched Amsterdam it was actually pretty endearing (although i agree with the comments above). If this was the bad show, the other two most have been outstanding. I also wonder if any of the people who are knocking it had heard anything besides “Young Folks”. It seemed like a lot of people were just there to talk and play with there cell phones. I’d definetly pay to see Peter Bjorn and John again. thanks for posting the mp3’s.
